Yasmin Wijnaldum was born on July 10, 1998, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She is of Dutch and Surinamese descent, a heritage that contributes to her distinctive appearance. Raised in Amsterdam, Yasmin developed an early interest in fashion, often exploring style inspirations through platforms like Tumblr and YouTube. At the age of 16, she moved to New York City to pursue her modeling career.

Yasmin's modeling journey began in 2014 when she participated in the Elite Model Look competition, representing the Netherlands in the world final. Her performance earned her a contract with Elite Model Management's Amsterdam branch. She made her runway debut at the Jean-Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2015 show and walked exclusively for Prada during the Spring/Summer 2016 season. Her first major campaign was for Prada's S/S 2016 collection, alongside Sasha Pivovarova and Natalia Vodianova. ​
